Shop your closet: a 30-day no-buy challenge
To shop your closet is to dress from the clothes you already own instead of buying more. Wearbird, a free digital closet for iPhone and iPad, turns it into a 30-day challenge: it counts the outfits your closet can make, logs what you wear, and shows the pieces still waiting.
Last updated: October 28, 2026
The short answer: for 30 days, wear only what you own. Add your clothes to Wearbird, wear one outfit a day from Today, and it counts as worn. Wearbird shows how many looks your closet can make, which pieces you haven’t worn in 30 days, and what each piece costs per wear.
The 30-day challenge, step by step
- Day 1: put your closet in your phone. Add each piece with the camera, from Photos, or from a frame of a video. Its background comes off on your phone. Closet then counts your looks, like “35 pieces · 1770 looks you can make”.
- Week 1: wear what’s waiting first. Filter Closet by Not worn in 30 days, or sort it by least worn. Tap Dress me in it on a piece to start a look around it.
- Every day: wear it, and it counts. Wear an outfit on Today and each piece in it is logged. Tiles show “Worn 5×” or “Not worn yet”.
- Weeks 2 and 3: let Wearbird mix. Today suggests looks for the weather and your day, and Ask for a look answers things like “dinner Friday, not too dressy”. Every look comes from clothes you own.
- Day 30: check your score. Your closet shows how much of your closet you wore in the last 30 days, your most worn pieces, and the ones still waiting. Month view counts your looks, the pieces you wore and your streak.

Find the clothes you forgot
- Not worn in 30 days. One filter in Closet shows every piece that hasn’t been out this month.
- Waiting to be worn. Your closet lists the pieces you haven’t worn, with Dress me in it to make a look around one.
- No outfit yet. Closet points out a piece that isn’t in any outfit (“No outfit with your green skirt yet”) and a piece you’ve never worn.
- Fresh ideas. Pieces you wore in the last few days come up less in Today’s ideas, so the rest of your closet gets a turn.
Cost per wear
Add what you paid for a piece, and Wearbird shows its cost per wear: the price divided by the times you wore it. It drops every time you wear the piece. Sort Closet by Lowest cost per wear to see which clothes have earned their price, and What you paid adds up the prices you entered. Only you see them.
In your photos can start the count with real history. It looks through the photos on your phone for days you wore a piece, and you pick which days to log, like “Worn 12× then. About $4 a wear.” Nothing is uploaded.
Rules that make a no-buy month work
- Decide what still counts as a need, like replacing worn-out basics, before day 1.
- Keep a list instead of a cart. Write down what you want, and look at it again on day 30.
- Wear the waiting pieces first. A piece you haven’t worn in months often only needs a new outfit around it.
- Count looks, not clothes. A few pieces that go together make more outfits than many that don’t.
Good to know
- Everything on this page is free in Wearbird and uses no AI credits.
- Your closet photos stay on your phone, and the prices you enter are only for you.
Questions
What does “shop your closet” mean?
Dressing from the clothes you already own as if they were new to you, instead of buying more. You look through what you have, find pieces you forgot or rarely wear, and make new outfits from them.
How do I start a no-buy challenge for clothes?
Pick a length, like 30 days, a season or a year, and decide what you may still buy, such as replacements. Then track what you wear. In Wearbird, add your clothes, wear an outfit from Today each day, and check Your closet on day 30.
Which app helps you shop your closet?
Wearbird, free on iPhone and iPad. It makes outfits only from clothes you own, logs what you wear, filters the pieces you haven’t worn in 30 days, and shows cost per wear.
How do I find clothes I haven’t worn?
In Closet, filter by Not worn in 30 days or sort by least worn. A piece you have never worn says Not worn yet, and Your closet lists the pieces waiting to be worn.
How is cost per wear worked out?
It is what you paid divided by the number of times you wore the piece. Add a price to a piece in Wearbird, and its cost per wear updates each time you wear it.
Can I count the days I wore something before I started?
Yes. In your photos finds photos on your phone where you wore a piece, and you choose which days to log as worn. It matches the clothing on your phone and uploads nothing.
What if I want to buy something after the challenge?
Closet can name the one piece that would add the most new outfits to what you already own, and how many outfits it would add. You buy one piece that works with everything instead of several that don’t.
